ActiDes now Partner in Asklepios Clinics' Green Hospital Program

The Green Hospital Program at Asklepios Clinics and its partners is based on
three core areas: Responsibility for the environment, preventative medicine,
ecological use of energy in new constructions and the renovation of clinics.
This kind of Program is unique in Germany and Europe. Numerous research and
development projects in the areas of: Green Building, Green Healthcare,
Green Patient and Green Healthcare IT create the focus and highlight the
innovative power of the program. Through efficient use of natural resources
in the running of a hospital, the development and use of renewable energy
technologies, as well as the use of health-enhancing, ecologically-friendly
materials in hospital construction, the Green Hospital Partner Program has
set itself the objective to campaign for ecologically-focused
sustainability, qualitative responsibility in future health care for the
protection of the environment and the wellbeing of the patient.

In Germany alone, up to a million clinic patients a year are made ill by
problematic pathogens. Up to a third of these infections could be avoided
with an appropriate drinking water hygiene regime. Reason enough then, for
the Green Hospital Programme to make intensive efforts to deal with this
range of issues and find a partner with expertise in this area for the
Asklepios Clinics‘ initiative. ActiDes Berlin GmbH, the leading company in
the field, was the specialist chosen.

Positive Field Report from Klinikum Bitterfeld
Klinikum Bitterfeld, a hospital located in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, has been using ActiDes drinking water treatment solutions for five years. After sustaining flood-related damage, and despite using a drinking-water purification system employing thermal rinsing, legionella continued to be found in the hospital’s water. Even additional measures (e.g., installing water filters, regular cleaning, etc.) resulted in no long-term improvements. Indeed, after only a short time, legionella were once again found in the water. For that reason, a new alternative form of drinking water purification and disinfection was sought. "In our search for the most effective method, in addition to focusing on the antibacterial effect, we also concentrated on the issue of conformity to ... the Drinking Water Ordinance,” explains facility manager Dr. J. Wormuth. At the beginning of 2006, after examining many of the other solutions available on the market, the hospital decided to use the ActiDes solution. “The drinking water analyses that have taken place since implementing the ActiDes solution confirm the absence of legionella and pseudomonas aeruginosa,” noted Dr. Wormuth. The positive side effects are that costs are moderate when compared to the procedures used before. The high personnel expenditures for the thermal process are also no longer there, and there is less wear and tear on the piping system.

Drinking water quality has made it into the headlines once again: “Health Authorities Find Germs in One Out of Every Eight Samples.” These are the results of an evaluation of 20,000 water samples from public sites, according to a report in the regional daily newspaper Neue Ruhr/Neue Rhein Zeitung. Between 2003 and 2009, health officials found legionella in 2,908 of the 22,786 warm water samples, and pseudomonas in 102 of 3,468 samples. According to a report issued by a research project conducted by Germany’s federal government, the problem lies not in the water itself but, rather, in the biofilm found in piping, which serves as a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. ActiDes solutions eliminate existing biofilm and prevent new biofilm from forming. Click here to see how it works.

ActiDes develops mobile production facilities for industrial clients. As part of a client project, ActiDes has developed the “i-Box,” the first mobile solution for the production of ActiDes® blue on-site at client facilities. The system (in this case, a P300) is built atop a stainless steel box or aluminium frame, which the client can easily use at various locations. It is then connected to the piping system on-site, rendering the usual assembly stage unnecessary.
